Sawyers Church

Sawyers Church

Sawyers Church has been in Brentwood for over 55 years seeking to serve and benefit the local community. Our strap line is “Working together. Building community. Making a difference”.

Our community projects include:

Baby & Toddler Groups
A great support for parents especially those who feel isolated or are struggling. We have a National Childbirth Trust advisor who helps with any issues relating to babies.

Children’s Clubs
Offering crafts, games and a café for 120+ children.

Youth
Over 100 young people attend our activities and we run a Youth Mentoring Scheme, for those on the fringe, vulnerable or in trouble. We get alongside them on an informal basis to provide support and encouragement.

Senior people
Have daytime groups to come along to and lunchtime clubs as well as outings.

Tuesday Club
This is run in partnership with Frontline (another charitable organisation) offering social evenings for 70+ adults with learning disabilities.

HIRC
We are a Hate Incident Reporting Centre (HIRC) where those who are victims or witnesses of hate incidents/crime can come to us as a place of safety and report the crime to one of our trained ambassadors who work closely with the police.

We also have a Men’s Football Team and organise Street Pastors for Brentwood who go out and help those frequenting the night time economy. Our Pastoral Care Team support those with more specific problems such as bereavement, divorce, debt, depression or any other needs that people need help with – the list is endless. One-off events include the Brentwood Half Marathon and Fun Run and Christmas Bazaar.

Organising activities and groups like these takes time and money and a good building! Our current building, which is in constant use, is no longer fit for purpose, so we currently have planning permission to completely redevelop the site which would not only secure the future for our existing projects but would also provide the opportunity for additional initiatives.

The money raised by Nexus will be used towards a dedicated crèche room. The new church building will be a real community hub and this room in particular will really be a part of that. As well as being used on a Sunday it will be a great facility during the week for our Mums & Toddler Groups, it will be used for activities for children of all ages and abilities, it will be a place where Mums and Dads will be able to come in and have a coffee and know that their children can play safely. It will be used by the National Childbirth Trust to give advice to new parents. It will be suitable for children with disabilities and we hope that in the future we will be able to develop the work to include parenting classes, financial advice and a safe place for visitation rights of absent parents and much more.
